Alumni Awards Given at CEE Alumni Dinner
CEE presented two alumni awards at an annual dinner for alumni on October 25, 2007. The CEE Distinguished Alumnus Award and the CEE Oustanding Alumni Service Award were given at the dinner attended by alumni, faculty, staff and students of CEE.
Cliff Davidson, Rex Elder and Jim Garrett
The CEE Distinguished Alumnus Award is intended to recognize CEE alumni who have one or more major achievements that have improved the work of professional engineers or have improved people’s lives in some way. This year the award was presented to Rex Elder. Mr. Elder graduated from Carnegie Tech with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1940. Building on the training and mentoring he obtained at Carnegie Tech, he went on to a challenging, actionpacked, and very successful career in hydraulic engineering and water resources development. Rex Elder was co-recipient of the ASCE James Croes Medal in 1947; elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1978; elected an Honorary Member of ASCE in 1993; and elected an Honorary Member of the International Association for Hydraulic Research in 1997. The CEE Outstanding Alumni Service Award is intended to recognize CEE alumni who have made sustained contributions to the engineering profession. Individuals to be considered for this award must have provided outstanding service over a period of time. This year the award was presented to Wayne Balta. Wayne received a Bachelor of Science Degree in civil engineering with University Honors from Carnegie Mellon University in 1982 and a Master of Science Degree in civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a Tau Beta Pi Fellow, in 1984. He has been inducted into the Tau Beta Pi national engineering honor society, the Chi Epsilon national civil engineering honor society, and the Sigma Xi scientific research society. Wayne currently is the Vice President of Corporate Environmental Affairs and Product Safety at IBM Corporation where he has global responsibility for environmental affairs, energy efficiency, chemical management and toxicology, as well as product safety and related hardware compliance functions.
